Route a Missouri Records Question
Missouri records are spread among state, county, city, and library custodians. These paths lead to the source best suited to each request:
- Property and address records: start with the local assessor, Recorder of Deeds, or city parcel portal identified in the street records section
- Earlier household entries: check the library and archive routes on the historical directory page
- A named person in an official record: compare the record types described in the resident lookup section
- State or county office routing: use the Missouri records office list and its linked custodian directories
- Material not found online: ask the relevant custodian about inspection or a written request under the Missouri Sunshine Law, RSMo Chapter 610
For certified state vital-record copies and eligibility questions, contact the Missouri DHSS Bureau of Vital Records, 930 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65109, at 573-751-6387. The state lobby recommends an appointment, with service hours listed as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; same-day turnaround is not guaranteed. The current DHSS instructions explain mail and local public-health agency options.
For other government records, Missouri has no single statewide request desk. Each governmental body designates a custodian under the Sunshine Law. Direct a request to the county or city office that holds the record, name the record type and date range, and ask for a cost estimate before copies are made.
